The Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center (AFNWC) is currently seeking to fill TWO full-time positions of Mechanical Engineer 009770231M & 009770241M  to work in the Air Vehicle or Carriage Equipment IPTs of the Long Range Standoff (LRSO) Cruise Missile Program Office, Nuclear Weapons Acquisition Division, Eglin AFB FL.

This position is an NH-0830-03 which has a typical 2024 salary range of $86,962 - $134,435

Primary responsibilities include management of prime contractor personnel in developing, integrating, and implementing technical solutions, promoting teamwork, and solving organizational issues to ensure an on-time delivery of the LRSO Weapon System.

The ideal candidate will have a background in mechanical or aerospace engineering as well as experience developing and evaluating aircraft or weapon system structures and mechanisms, material properties and vehicle dynamics.  In addition, systems engineering, weapon integration, carriage equipment, A/C testing, interface development and management experience is also valued.  

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:
  • Provide mechanical assessments of weapon system and applicable sub-systems.
  • Review technical CDRLs, variances, engineering drawings and requirements. 
  • Support ground and flight test.
  • Advise Lead Engineer on technical matters of system development and refinement. 
  • Develop technical documentation and reports, that support system engineering technical reviews.  This includes configuration audits and system verification reviews.  
  • Advise IPT and Division leadership on technical risks and issues effecting the cost, schedule, and performance during development, test and evaluation, and fielding, and sustainment of the LRSO.
  • Develop and present technical briefings and reports to Senior Executives.
  • Engage with geographically dispersed stakeholders including the AFNWC, Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration, Air Force Global Strike Command, and Department of Defense (DoD) officials to ensure LRSO technical activities are successfully planned, coordinated, and executed.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
  • Candidates should have demonstrated technical engineering experience in the mechanical aspects of weapon systems.
  • Candidates should have demonstrated experience leading in a team environment.
  • Candidates should have strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Candidates should have demonstrated experience conducting systems engineering design reviews (SETRs), reviewing drawings and analysis, planning validation and verification events, reviewing test plans and test reports, supporting test readiness reviews (TRRs), facilitating failure review boards (FRBs), and support all-up round (AUR) level tests.
  • Candidates should be knowledgeable in DoD acquisition processes, to include but not limited to: risk and opportunity management processes, configuration control board processes, and Government Control Account Manager (GCAM) processes.
  • Candidates should have a strong background in professional scientific or engineering principles, modeling and simulation frameworks, requirements development, and verification activities.
  • It is desirable for candidates to have experience in the development, test and evaluation, fielding, and/or sustainment of cruise missiles.

  • Employee must meet Defense Acquisition Workforce Improvement Act (DAWIA) requirements, which includes achieving Engineering and Technical Management “Practitioner” certification category within required timeframe after appointment.
  • In accordance with the Ethics in Government Act, 1978, employee may be required to file an OGE Form 450, Confidential Financial Disclosure Report, upon appointment and will be required to file annually
  • Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft.
  • This is a drug testing designated position and is subject to random drug testing.
  • Required to handle and safeguard sensitive and classified information in accordance with regulations to reduce potential compromise; employee must obtain and maintain Top Secret clearance with SCI eligibility.
