Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center (AFNWC) is currently seeking a full-time Mechanical Engineer to work in the Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) Systems Directorate, Minuteman III Systems Division (MMIII), Propulsion Branch, at Hill Air Force Base near Layton, Utah.

This position (205994) is a NH-830-03 which has a typical 2025 salary range of $88,621 - $137,000.
 
The primary purpose of these positions is to serve as a sustainment engineer and technical subject matter expert for the Minuteman III (MMIII) Propulsion Branch. Weapon System responsibilities include the sustainment of the Propulsion Booster, flight controls, Propulsion System Rocket Engine, ordnance systems, test stands, handling equipment, and testing to include Aging Surveillance and MMIII Operational Test Launches.
 
Employees will be part of a dynamic engineering team, working with Department of Defense (DoD) and industry leaders.  Team members are expected to operate at a high-performance pace and develop and maintain a radical teaming-centric culture.  This position provides support for the ground-based leg of America’s nuclear deterrence triad.   
 
DUTIES:
  • Serves as an engineer on a multi-disciplinary team, providing technical leadership and expertise on contractor work performance to include tracking progress, evaluating work products, supporting missions, and facilitating process development/improvement initiatives. 
  • Actively uses Systems Engineering principles and processes in support of multiple sustainment and acquisition efforts.
  • Serves as the MMIII technical subject matter expert for assigned areas and advises on technical design, development, acquisition, test, and operational issues related to requirements, systems engineering, safety, and security.
  • Leads projects for the engineering team, setting priorities and tracking multiple technical issues at a time across multiple programs.
  • Communicates issues and resolutions to contractors, stakeholders, and team members with varying technical backgrounds.
  • Drives rapid solutions to technical issues to ensure time certain capability deliveries.
  • Performs probabilistic risk analysis, hazard analysis, fault trees, and other systems engineering concepts to sustain the weapon system, and reports findings and recommendations.
  • Proactively develops and presents technical briefings and reports to program stakeholders and senior leaders.
  • Executes Aging Surveillance testing in accordance with AFI 99-103, Test and Evaluation.
  • Delivers the required support for MMIII operational tests, to include pre-briefings and post-analysis briefings.
  • Engages with extended and geographically dispersed stakeholders including subject matter experts from across AFNWC, Air Force Global Strike Command, support contractors, etc., to ensure technical activities are successfully planned, coordinated, and executed.
SKILLS:
  • Three or more years of relevant engineering experience is typically desired to successfully perform as an engineer.
  • Experience working in areas such as research and development, design, acquisition, production, maintenance, repair, engineering support, testing and evaluation, and/or system modification is preferred.
  • Understanding of DoD weapon systems issues, and experience working with government organizations in areas such as research and development, design, acquisition, production, maintenance, repair, engineering support, testing and evaluation, and/or system modification is highly valued.
  • Familiarity with Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) MMIII weapon system is preferred.
  • Experience administering systems engineering principles and identifying weapon system sustainment needs is highly desirable.
  • Background in test, evaluation, and modeling execution is highly valued.
  • Familiarity with the integration of nuclear hardness, environmental/corrosion, and safety is desirable.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal are required. 
 
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION:
  • U.S. CITIZENSHIP
  • Employee must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance and will be required to handle and safeguard sensitive and/or classified information in accordance with regulations to reduce potential compromise.
  • Employee must have graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited program.
  • These are drug testing designated positions and are subject to random drug testing.

  • Employee may be required to meet Defense Acquisition Workforce Improvement Act (DAWIA) requirements, which includes achieving Engineering and Technical Management “Practitioner” certification category within required timeframe after appointment.
  • Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station.
