The Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center (AFNWC) is currently seeking one full-time Director of Staff for the Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) Systems Directorate (NI), Hill AFB, UT, working directly for the Program Executive Officer (PEO) for ICBMs.  The ICBM Systems Directorate securely delivers America’s combat-ready ICBM capabilities, enabling deterrence every day.  The 1000+ member organization executes over $6 billion annually for the land-based leg of the nuclear triad, which includes the development, modernization, and sustainment of ICBMs and associated weapon system command and control, flight and launch systems, missile silos, and other ground architecture.
 
This position (986850) may be filled as an NH-0301-04 Supervisory Executive Staff Officer or NH-1101-04 Supervisory Acquisition Program Manager, which has a typical 2025 salary range of $124,531 - $190,424.
 
Candidates should have extensive knowledge of staff operations and acquisition functions to develop and implement innovative approaches and solutions to staff operations issues and to provide definitive input on how proposed changes would be detrimental or would enhance the mission and objectives of AF, AFMC, AFNWC, and the ICBM Systems Directorate.
 
DUTIES:
  • Provides the PEO with the information required to make decisions relating to staff operations and organizational management and implement those decisions.
  • Represents the PEO with a variety of Congressional, DoD, AF, MAJCOM, Center, community leaders, business executives, and distinguished visitors. 
  • Manages and chairs Directorate resource management board(s) that manage Division needs for personnel, funding, and facilities.
  • Plans, organizes, and oversees Directorate activities and manages official horizontal and vertical communications within the Directorate.  Develops goals and objectives that integrate Directorate and higher-level objectives.
  • Ensures Directorate leadership receives completed staff work to support fully informed decisions.  Conduct Directorate-level reviews of mandatory acquisition reports, manage key acquisition programmatic reviews, and lead reviews of program cost/schedule/performance with acquisition programs.
  • Establishes, revises, or reviews policies, procedures, mission objectives, and organization design as necessary to eliminate work problems or barriers to mission accomplishment, promote team building, implement quality improvements, or in response to concerns with regulatory compliance and/or customer requirements.
  • Establishes metric and analysis systems to recognize emerging issues and trends within the Directorate to ensure efficiency and effective compliance with regulatory procedures and develop viable recommendations and resolutions.
  • Presents the status of key Directorate staff operations initiatives to the PEO and lead strategic planning activities with the PEO and organizational senior/executive level managers.
  • Exercises supervisory personnel management responsibilities at least 25% of the time. Plan work to be accomplished by subordinates, set and adjust short/long-term priorities, and prepare schedules for completion of work.
 
DESIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
  • Knowledge of staff operations management concepts, principles, and methodologies.
  • Ability to oversee the efforts of subordinate organizations responsible for various aspects of staff operations management across an organization, including its geographically separated units.
  • Knowledge of AF acquisition missions, objectives, and procedures and how to organize, train, and equip the acquisition workforce.
  • Expert ability to communicate and interact effectively at the highest levels in order to achieve stated positions or to make an adequate case for a particular strategy which may not be readily accepted, but which is the best solution to achieve overall ICMB Systems Directorate goals. Expert skill in briefing objectives, strategies, and implementation concepts to the Directorate and senior/executive level managers.
  • Ability to think both tactically and strategically in order to discern short-, medium-, and long-term organizational effects of changes in staff operations practices, procedures, and policies.
  • Expert in leading, managing, supervising, and communicating with people with the ability to oversee the efforts of subordinate organizations responsible for various aspects of staff operations.
 
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION:
  • U.S. CITIZENSHIP
  • This is a drug testing designated position. The incumbent is subject to pre-employment drug testing as a condition of employment, and participation in random drug testing.
  • May be required to travel by military or commercial aircraft in the performance of assigned duties.
  • May be required to work overtime.
  • Required to handle and safeguard sensitive and/or classified information in accordance with regulations to reduce potential compromise.
  • Additional duties as assigned by the PEO.
  • If applying as an 1101, employee must meet Defense Acquisition Workforce Improvement Act (DAWIA) requirements, which includes achieving Program Management “Advanced” (Former Level III) certification category within required timeframe after appointment.
