Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center (AFNWC) is currently seeking a full-time General Engineer to work in the Sentinel Systems Division, Chief of Software Office, at Hill Air Force Base near Layton, Utah.
This position (986908) is an NH-801-03 which has a typical 2025 salary range of $88,621 - $137,000. (salary may increase at the start of 2026)
The AFNWC Sentinel Systems Division manages a major defense acquisition program charged to deliver a full system replacement for the nation’s Minuteman III Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) System, providing a strategic deterrent to nuclear attack against the United States. The Chief of Software Office is responsible for the following:
- Organization, training, and equipping of the Sentinel software engineers
- Sentinel software governance, compliance, and assessment
- External Sentinel software support management
The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a general engineer on the Chief of Software (CoSW) Office Insight Team, which includes analyzing contractor-provided metrics related to cost/schedule/performance, planning/managing the Sentinel software metric repository, and functioning as the organization’s technical specialist in weapon system development estimation.
DUTIES:
- Responsible for analyzing contractor-provided software development metrics, including cost, schedule, performance, and quality, to pinpoint trends, anomalies, and potential risks. This involves evaluating the validity and reliability of the data to guarantee accuracy and consistency, preparing comprehensive reports and presentations to summarize findings for management and stakeholders, and developing data visualizations to effectively communicate insights.
- Identify deviations from planned targets, propose corrective actions, and compare contractor performance against industry benchmarks to assess effectiveness. Close collaboration with contractors is essential to understand and align their metric collection and reporting processes with organizational requirements.
- Lead the design, implementation, and maintenance of a robust and scalable weapon system software metric repository, utilizing technologies such as databases or data warehouses. This includes defining the schema, data structures, and metadata to ensure a well-organized and easily accessible data environment.
- Function as the organization’s technical specialist in weapon system software development estimation by leveraging techniques like COCOMO, Function Point Analysis, and Agile Estimation to provide expert guidance.
- Develop and maintain tailored estimation models and tools specific to Sentinel software projects, offering support to project teams in creating accurate and reliable estimates, and reviewing and validating contractor-provided estimates.
- Conduct independent estimates as required, analyze historical project data to refine the accuracy of existing models, and stay current with industry best practices.
- Develop and deliver training on estimation methods, participate in the creation of organizational standards and guidelines, and advise program management on the potential cost and schedule implications of technical decisions, ensuring well-informed planning and resource allocation.
SKILLS:
- Positions at this level typically have 5 years of relevant engineering experience.
- Proficiency in data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI) highly desired
- Proficiency in data analysis techniques and statistical methods highly desired
- Breadth of engineering experience is preferred.
- Experience with software development metrics and estimation techniques preferred
- Knowledge of software development methodologies (e.g., Agile, Waterfall) preferred
- Excellent communication and presentation skills required
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team required
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION:

- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance, and will be required to handle and safeguard sensitive and/or classified information in accordance with regulations to reduce potential compromise.

- In accordance with the Ethics in Government Act, 1978, employee may be required to file an OGE Form 450, Confidential Financial Disclosure Report, upon appointment and will be required to file annually.
- Employee must meet Defense Acquisition Workforce Improvement Act (DAWIA) requirements, which includes achieving Engineering and Technical Management “Practitioner” certification category within the required timeframe after appointment.
