The Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center (AFNWC) is seeking a full-time General Engineer 009326381M to work in the sustainment branch of the NATO Strike Support Division (NDW) of the Air Delivered Capabilities Directorate, Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC) at JBSA-Lackland in San Antonio, TX.

This position is a NH-0801-03 which has a typical 2026 salary range of $90,823 - $136,802 (Includes locality pay for San Antonio, TX)

DUTIES:
The position serves as a Sustainment Engineer within the Weapons Storage & Security System (WS3) program, responsible for enhancing system reliability, maintainability, and full lifecycle management. The selected candidate will perform systematic performance analysis, characterize failure modes, identify performance trends, and develop robust engineering solutions to ensure operational availability targets for the WS3 consistently achieved. Engineers in this role maintain oversight of all system discrepancies reported by field units (USAFE) and provide direct technical support by responding to Engineering Technical Assistance Requests (ETARs).
Additionally, the candidate will lead obsolescence risk assessments, develop mitigation strategies utilizing programs such as the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, and perform quality assurance inspections on fabricated WS3 components to verify adherence to engineering standards. Duties culminate in the ability to define critical system-level problems, generate engineering testing and verification documentation, produce redlined engineering drawings, and present actionable solutions to WS3 stakeholders. The engineer will also conduct briefings for Program Management Reviews (PMRs) and utilize 3D modeling tools to augment sustainment engineering expertise.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
  • Knowledge of multidisciplinary professional engineering theories, concepts, and standard practices, with a focus on performing systematic performance analysis and characterizing system failure modes.
  • Experience conducting obsolescence risk assessments, implementing mitigation strategies, and liaising with the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) or utilizing SBIR programs.
  • Ability to perform quality assurance inspections on fabricated and machined components, verifying strict adherence to DoW standards and specifications outlined in technical data packages.
  • Expertise in generating engineering testing/verification documentation, producing redlined engineering drawings, and submitting technical data change orders in accordance with Configuration Management Plans.
  • Experience providing direct technical support to field units and responding to Engineering Technical Assistance Requests (ETARs) in compliance with established regulations (e.g., AFMAN 63-1202).
  • Knowledge and experience in general engineering fields with demonstrated competence in the areas of structures, electronics and/or mechanical systems
  • Experience with development and sustainment engineering methodologies
  • Knowledge of continuous process improvement strategies and applications
  • Proficiency, or a strong foundation with the ability to rapidly develop proficiency, in 3D modeling software such as SolidWorks for engineering design and sustainment support.
  • Expertise in monitoring and analyzing applicable system health data and statistical reports to track performance trends, evaluates results to identify emerging deficiencies, and develops engineering solutions to counter negative trends and optimize sustainment goals.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with a broad range of weapon system stakeholders
  • Ability to orally present and express ideas, information and concepts clearly and concisely in a manner appropriate to the audience
  • Experience in preparing quality reports to include supported recommendations, meaningful program information, written summaries and results from synthesized data and/or metric analysis
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships among team members; demonstrated problem solving and decision making skills
  • Expertise in tracking program status, delays and opportunities. Ability to establish project/program goals, objectives, and completion strategies
  • Desirable for applicant to have experience with weapon system programs and ability to interpret nuclear weapon and related nuclear enterprise policies
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION:

  • This is a drug testing designated position. The incumbent is subject to pre-employment drug testing as a condition of employment, and participation in random drug testing.
  • Technical Master’s Degree Desired
  • Required to handle and safeguard sensitive and/or classified information in accordance with regulations to reduce potential compromise; employee must obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance
  • This position has been designated an acquisition position and is covered by the Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP). Employee must meet Defense Acquisition Workforce Improvement Act (DAWIA) requirements, which includes achieving Engineering and Technical Management “Practitioner” certification category within required timeframe after appointment.
  • Occasional travel is required.  Travel may account for up to 20% of the time, but can also be negotiated within the branch.
