Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center (AFNWC) is currently seeking a full-time Technical Expert Lead General Engineer (emphasis on Systems Engineering, Integration, and Test) to work in the Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) Systems Directorate, Digital Capabilities Division at Hill Air Force Base near Layton, Utah.

This position (986878) is an NH-0801-04 which has a typical 2026 salary range of $125,776– $192,331.

Engineers in AFNWC solve highly-complex problems to promote national security through nuclear deterrence. They solve the most complex, high-risk aspects of the Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) program – the ground-based leg of America’s Nuclear Triad. The AFNWC ICBM Systems Directorate manages the sustainment, design, development, and integrated life-cycle activities of the ICBM family of systems including Minuteman III, warhead capabilities, and Sentinel.

The primary purpose of this position is to serve as the Systems Engineering, Integration, and Test (SEIT) technical expert for the Digital Mission Systems Branch. The Digital Mission Systems Branch provides ICBM Directorate-wide digital capabilities essential for weapon system testing, baseline management, modeling and simulation, software development, and product support modernization. These digital systems, developed and maintained by the Digital Capabilities Division, are foundational to the design, deployment, testing, and ongoing operations of the ICBM enterprise.

DUTIES:
  • Guides and leads a diverse team of government employees, government support contractors, and other stakeholders in developing, integrating, and implementing technical solutions to diverse, highly complex problems, promoting teamwork, and solving broad organizational issues to ensure a technically rigorous, flexible, and low-risk approach to ensure digital system capabilities are available to meet program milestones and events.
  • Provides program leadership and technical guidance on systems engineering artifacts (requirements and architecture), establishes modeling standards/approaches, and defines and oversees governance and development activities.
  • Engages in engineering; concept planning; design and development; integration, evaluation, and auditing of SEIT artifacts/documents/products; identifies and resolves highly complex technical problems related to the design and development of digital systems and capabilities.
  • Leads technical development of team and contractor work products. Partners with mission team members and contractors to develop system designs in support of mission requirements. Participates in technical review boards and reviews contractor designs/work products.
  • Provides guidance on systems engineering and digital engineering methodologies; mentors team members to consider multiple aspects of the system and how they might impact system performance and integration.
  • Engages with extended and geographically dispersed stakeholders, including subject matter experts from across the ICBM Systems Directorate, Air Force Global Strike Command, Support Contractors, and DAF and DoD enterprise partners to ensure technical activities are successfully planned, coordinated, and executed.
SKILLS:
  • Experience with large-scale systems engineering, specifically complex digital system architecture, that includes evaluating risks for a large, complex, multimillion dollar defense program. This typically equates to at least 7-10 years of relevant systems engineering experience.
  • Strong technical skills in engineering sufficient to serve as a senior subject matter expert who can identify technical gaps and deficiencies in teamwork products (e.g. requirements, architecture, documentation). Plans team activities and develops plans of action and milestones/schedules to meet higher-level schedule events.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills to guide team members across the Directorate, including the ability to translate complex engineering concepts into actionable guidance to achieve program milestones and mission success.
  • Advanced expertise in System Architecture Design, Unified Modeling Language (UML), and Systems Modeling Language (SysML).
  • Hands-on experience with Cameo Enterprise Architect or similar modeling platforms is highly desired.
  • Breadth of engineering experience is preferred.
  • Depth of experience in integrating systems engineering efforts from multiple teams within an enterprise is highly valued.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance and will be required to handle and safeguard sensitive and/or classified information in accordance with regulations to reduce potential compromise.
