Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center (AFNWC) is currently seeking a full-time General Engineer (Technical Lead) 009325171M to work in the Advanced Studies and Analysis Division at Kirtland Air Force Base near Albuquerque, NM.
This position is an NH-0801-04, which has a typical 2026 salary range of$127,141 - $194,417 (with locality).
This position’s duty location is at AFNWC Kirtland AFB NM with limited and infrequent teleworking (occasional situational/emergency only).
This position serves as the non-supervisory Technical Lead for the Advanced Studies and Analysis Division. The position leads, directs, and reviews technical efforts that explore new concepts and/or future upgrades to existing systems across the Air Force portfolio of nuclear weapons and delivery systems. Projects may include developing roadmaps, assessing the impact of emerging technologies, and pre-acquisition studies such as Analysis of Alternatives.
SKILLS:
- Candidates must have experience leading working groups or teams of highly educated, multi-disciplined civilian, military, and/or contractors.
- Candidates must have demonstrated success in planning, proposing, and directing projects to resolve complex, ambiguous problems across multiple scientific/engineering disciplines.
- Candidates must have strong written and verbal communication skills and have demonstrated successes integrating disparate organizational expertise and subsequent products into a cohesive assessment.
- Candidates must have demonstrated experience in working effectively with multiple Department of War (DOW), Department of Energy (DOE), industry, and academia.
- Ideal candidates will have:
- One or more advanced degrees (M.S., Ph.D.) in engineering and/or physical sciences.
- Experience in design of aerospace vehicles or missiles, design and theory of radars, modeling of survivability throughout military engagements, and/or weapon lethality assessments.
- Experience in financial tracking, contracting actions, and successfully employing risk management. Experience in DOW Acquisition program offices, especially early or pre-acquisition is highly desirable.
- Intermediate or Senior level Professional Military Education (Air Command and Staff College, Air War College or similar)
DUTIES:
- Directs development of future nuclear weapon concepts, engineering design trade studies, and performance analyses (effectiveness, survivability, supportability). Generates potential requirements for future acquisition programs. Identifies areas for technical maturation.
- Serves as the technical lead of team applying advanced theories, concepts, and principles related to development or sustainment of nuclear weapons.
- Plans (set objectives, prioritizes, develops budget estimates, determines technical approaches), organizes, and oversees dynamic projects that vary from quick-turn 90-day studies to multi-year efforts.
- Prepares individualized plans of activities for team members to accomplish with associated timelines; prepares inputs to supervisors on team member performance.
- Provides expert advice to senior leaders and/or agency officials responsible for broad program operations and decisions.
- Coordinates, communicates, and collaborates with multiple agencies and across DOW, DOE, and Industry to inform all aspects of data collection, analysis and report results.
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION:

- Must obtain and maintain a Top Secret clearance with SCI eligibility and SAP accesses as required; required to handle and safeguard sensitive and/or classified information in accordance with regulations.
- Candidates must have a college degree in engineering (or satisfy other qualifying criteria as described below). Candidates must have at least one year at the NH-03/GS-13/DR-02 grade, or industry equivalent. Candidates must have a minimum of 8 years of relevant technical experience. - This position has been designated as an acquisition position and is covered by the Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP). The selectee must meet or be capable of achieving the APDP certification as designated on the position description (PD) within the defined grace period for that certification level after assignment. The position also requires the employee to engage in acquisition continuous learning activities achieving 80 continuous learning points (CLPs) every 24 months.
- This is a drug testing designated position and is subject to initial and random drug testing.
- In accordance with the Ethics in Government Act, 1978, employee may be required to file an OGE Form 450, Confidential Financial Disclosure Report, upon appointment and will be required to file annually.
- May be required to travel, typically 0 – 2 trips per month.
- May be required to occasionally work overtime or on an emergency basis.
