Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center (AFNWC) is currently seeking a full-time General Engineer to work in the Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) Systems Directorate (NI), Sentinel Systems Integration Office (NIX-SI) at Hill Air Force Base in Layton, UT.

This position (988439) is an NH-0801-03, which has a typical 2026 salary range of $89,508 – $138,370.

The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a key individual contributor managing the engineering design, acquisition, implementation, and sustainment of the Sentinel Training System. These mission-critical systems prepare operators, maintainers, security forces, and cyber personnel to command and secure the LGM-35A Sentinel program—the ground-based leg of America’s Nuclear Triad. The ideal candidate will apply strong systems engineering principles to review technical engineering baselines, evaluate training hardware design, assess training curricula, and actively collaborate with cross-functional defense teams.

DUTIES: 
    • Serves as subject matter expert in interpreting and applying training system policy and guidance. Establishes alliances between directorate leadership, division leadership, peers, and other agency officials to field, monitor, and report effectiveness of training system regulations.
    • Provides advice on policy implementation to programs and other activities; resolves complex conflicts of policy through coordination with directorate leadership, stakeholders, and other agencies. Provides guidance to organizations to resolve difficult or unforeseen issues on design, regulatory limitations, and/or exchange information and expedite work.
    • Develops, organizes, integrates, implements and manages training system processes and procedures. Ensure processes and procedures are defined and communicated to program management. Successful implementation often requires new and innovative approaches to resolve complex problems; optimizes resources to meet directorate goals while supporting multiple programs.
    • Directs data collection, analysis, and metrics to report on process effectiveness. Drives modification or new processes to implement continuous process improvement. Pursues or creates training development programs in order improve overall directorate knowledge of the training system and improve ability within the branch.
    • Executes activities in accordance with training system priorities for allocation of resources to accomplish multiple projects/programs goals. Develops and integrates innovative approaches to attain goals and minimize expenditures.
    • Establishes processes and procedures to collect, manage and communicate training system performance data to stake holders.
    • Leads technical reviews of contractor deliverables to:
      • Ensure adherence to appropriate requirements, governance, and guidance;
      • Assess progress toward training system development goals and objectives;
      • Identify risk areas; and
      • Provide feedback to resolve challenges associated with the training system during the Sentinel program life cycle. 
    • Monitors schedule, cost, performance, and acquisition requirements for programs within the Training System Integrated Product Team and assists in resolving issues encountered throughout the acquisition process. 
    • Engages with extended and geographically dispersed stakeholders, including subject matter experts from across the ICBM Systems Directorate, Air Force Global Strike Command, United States Strategic Command, the National Security Agency, various support contractors, and senior Department of War officials—all to ensure Sentinel technical activities are successfully planned, coordinated, and executed. 
    • Analyzes, evaluates, and provides formal technical feedback on technical data packages, engineering Drawing Packages, and Contract Data Requirements Lists (CDRLs) for Sentinel training hardware.
    • Applies systems engineering and defense acquisition principles to support training program baselines through both development (Acquisition) and long-term operational support (Sustainment).
    • Reviews and ensures training designs align strictly with Air Force Instructions (AFIs), Technical Orders (TOs), military standards, and operational guidelines.
    • Conducts engineering reviews of Training Device Designs (e.g., simulators, part-task trainers, hardware-in-the-loop environments) and associated Training Curriculum Development pathways.
    • Actively engages and coordinates with multi-disciplinary stakeholders, including Government program offices, prime contractors, and operational units, to resolve technical hurdles.
 SKILLS: 
    • Hands-on experience in Training Device Design (simulators, trainers) and/or Training Curriculum Development is highly desired.
    • Typically requires 3 or more years of relevant engineering experience with a demonstrated capability to perform as a self-reliant individual contributor.
    • Demonstrated experience reviewing and interpreting complex engineering Drawing Packages, CDRLs, TOs, and AFIs to provide actionable engineering feedback.
    • Strong technical skills in engineering, sufficient to serve as a senior subject matter expert able to identify technical gaps and deficiencies in contractor deliverables requiring attention for the next iteration. 
    • Prior experience developing, reviewing, or managing training platforms for military weapons systems is preferred.
    • Depth of experience in integrating systems engineering efforts from multiple teams within an enterprise is highly valued. 
    • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, with a proactive approach to identifying program risks and facilitating technical solutions.
    • Breadth of engineering experience and relevant degree. 
    • Proven familiarity with Government Acquisition (DoD 5000 series lifecycle) or Government Sustainment processes is strongly preferred.
    • Leadership and mentoring skills to guide and develop team members across the Sentinel Systems Division in pursuit of program objectives and milestones are strongly preferred. 
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION (NOT ALL-INCLUSIVE):

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret/SCI security clearance and required to handle and safeguard sensitive and/or classified information in accordance with regulations to reduce potential compromise.
  • This is a Critical Engineering Position (CEP). Candidates must meet the minimum core criteria at the Lead Engineer level per AFMC Instruction 62-202, Criteria for Critical Engineering Positions, 13 November 2023.

  • A professional engineering degree at the bachelor’s level from an ABET accredited institution is required; an advanced engineering degree, such as a Master’s or a PhD is preferred.
  • This position is designated as a drug testing position. The incumbent is subjected to pre-employment drug testing as a condition of employment, and participation in random drug testing thereafter.
  • Employee must meet Defense Acquisition Workforce Improvement Act (DAWIA) requirements, which includes achieving Engineering and Technical Management “Practitioner” certification category within required timeframe after appointment.
