Brent Chadick Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- The challenges we face in sustaining, modernizing and developing nuclear weapons often stem from complex human interactions and intricate problem sets. We sometimes overlook this, misattributing friction to simpler causes. Recognizing that these issues are fundamentally rooted in the “Human Weapons System” can dramatically improve our effectiveness in finding solutions. The Department of Defense stands at the forefront of a world crowded with complex challenges, demanding not only strategic blueprints and budget allocations, but an “old path” in leadership. As technology has increased, we are more socially connected but less social, less kind, less considerate. These traits have slowly degraded over time — people skills matter. Our greatest weapon isn’t technology; it’s us — the dedicated men and women, both military and civilian, who answer the call to service. Sure, we say this in passing, but can we speak truth to power? If we truly wish to conquer the future, we must forge a culture where leadership becomes less about a title, and more about a force for good, ignited by unwavering principles: candor, open-mindedness, honesty and trustworthiness. From my perspective, these aren’t just ideals. They are the fuel that powers individuals, fortifies teams, sharpens our vision and propels us to unprecedented heights. Candor: Speak truth, forge strength In the crucible of national security, clarity is survival. Candor, delivered with respect and empathy, forges trust. When we embrace candor, we unleash the power of honest assessment, constructive feedback and personal ownership. It’s not about bluntness; it’s about speaking truth with a burning desire for shared triumph, fostering an environment where every voice can contribute to victory. Candor is a place where accountability is welcomed and not viewed as toxic. True candor helps us unleash the power of the American Warrior because they feel loved, valued and appreciated. It empowers us to confront harsh realities, expose vulnerabilities and engineer ingenious solutions. Let’s banish the shadows of euphemisms and sugarcoating; let’s just be real. Open-mindedness: Unlock innovation through listening Great leaders listen more than they command. Larry King said, “I remind myself every morning: Nothing I say this day will teach me anything. So, if I’m going to learn, I must do it by listening.” They approach every personal interaction as a student, eager to absorb diverse perspectives and shatter preconceived notions. Too often, we’re trapped in the echo chamber of our own thoughts, missing the whispers of innovation and collaboration because folks are afraid to share their successes and failures. Cultivate open-mindedness through practicing active listening, challenging assumptions, asking better questions and embracing academic curiosity. By opening our minds, we unlock a treasure trove of creative solutions, cement unbreakable bonds and cultivate a culture of relentless learning. Honesty: Lead with a heart of integrity Honesty is the bedrock upon which trust is built. It is not merely the absence of deceit; it’s the presence of unwavering integrity, which assures others that our actions will always align with our words.
