Fueling 'fit to fight’ ethos: Staying safe during summer PT, outdoor workouts

KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. --  Staying physically fit is more than just an Air Force standard — it is a core pillar of our mission readiness and personal well-being. Whether you are prepping for your next fitness assessment, logging miles on the pavement or hitting the outdoor fitness pads, maintaining a consistent physical training routine keeps us sharp.

However, executing those workouts during the dog days of August introduces unique physiological challenges. With high temperatures and soaring humidity, a standard workout can quickly turn hazardous if we fail to respect the elements.

To help our AFNWC team "arrive alive" and excel in their fitness goals, the Safety Office has compiled key strategies to keep your summer workouts productive, injury-free and safe.

Master the science of hydration and avoid the "water trap"

We all know we need to drink water, but effective hydration starts long before you lace up your running shoes. To perform at your best, you must build a reservoir:
  • Pre-hydrate: Drink plenty of fluids the day before a strenuous workout. If you wait until you are thirsty on the track, you are already dehydrated.
  • The urine color test: It may sound basic, but it is the easiest self-assessment tool available. Aim for a pale, straw-like color. Dark yellow indicates a critical need for fluids.
  • Beware of overhydration: More is not always better. Chugging excessive amounts of pure water can lead to hyponatremia (a dangerous dilution of essential sodium levels in your blood). Keep your fluid intake to a maximum of 1 to 1.5 quarts per hour during intense exercise, and consider incorporating sports drinks to replenish lost electrolytes.
Outsmart the heat: Know your two flag standards (worksite vs. PT)
Your body is an incredibly adaptive machine, but physical training generates intense metabolic heat (often exceeding 800 watts). Because of this, Department of the Air Force Instruction 48-151 (Thermal Stress Program) establishes two completely different flag thresholds in Chapters 3 and 4.

While the standard base flag conditions are fine for normal daily duties, physical training leaders and individuals must use the stricter Sports Medicine Flag Conditions shown in DAFI 48-151 to prevent heat illness during high-intensity workouts.

Importantly, the sports medicine scale also covers the cold end of the spectrum, introducing a cold-warning "white flag" threshold to protect runners from hypothermia.

Know the warning signs: Heat exhaustion vs. heatstroke
Heat illnesses exist on a spectrum, and recognizing where a teammate falls on that spectrum can save a life:
  • Heat exhaustion (act immediately): Characterized by heavy sweating, a rapid pulse, dizziness, headache, nausea and muscle cramps. If you or a wingman experience these, get to the shade immediately; loosen tight clothing; sip cool water; and apply cold, wet cloths to the skin.
  • Heatstroke (medical emergency): This is a life-threatening crisis. Signs include confusion, slurred speech, loss of consciousness, hot/dry skin (or profuse sweating), and a dangerously high body temperature. Call 911 immediately. While waiting for first responders, move the person to a cool area and use ice or cold water to lower their body temperature as rapidly as possible.
Gear up and ditch distractions

Safety is not just about temperature; it is also about situational awareness:
  • Dress for success: Wear lightweight, loose-fitting and moisture-wicking fabrics that allow sweat to evaporate. If you are exercising near roads, wear highly visible or reflective gear — especially at dawn or dusk.
  • Check your sole: Worn-out athletic shoes are the leading cause of repetitive-use injuries like shin splints, plantar fasciitis and knee pain. Ensure your footwear has proper shock absorption and fits comfortably.
  • Eyes up, phones down: If you run with headphones, keep the volume low enough to hear approaching vehicles, wildlife or commands from others. Keep your eyes on the path ahead — uneven pavement, loose gravel or sudden obstacles can cause painful ankle rolls or falls in a split second.
No matter how fit you are, never let pride get in the way of safety. Work out with a partner whenever possible, look out for each other, and never hesitate to call for a break.
