Minuteman III (LGM-30G)

An arc of light from a missile test against a dark skyWeapon System Features
The LGM-30G Minuteman III is the land-based component of the U.S. nuclear triad, providing a responsive and survivable strategic deterrent. The current force consists of 400 Minuteman III missiles dispersed at F.E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyoming; Malmstrom Air Force Base, Montana; and Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota.

Missile combat crews, consisting of two officers, are on alert around the clock in underground Launch Control Centers. A robust and redundant communications network ensures the president and U.S. Strategic Command have reliable, direct contact with each crew.

Background
First deployed in 1970, the Minuteman III system has evolved to meet new security challenges through more than 60 years of continuous service. A “remove and replace” maintenance philosophy with ongoing life-extension programs for its rocket motors, guidance systems and other components have sustained the weapon system ensuring its high reliability.

What We Do
The tip of a missile is shown in a siloWhile certain Minuteman components and subsystems have been upgraded over the years, most of the fundamental infrastructure in use today is the original equipment supporting more than 50 years of continuous operation.

The system program office manages the day-to-day sustainment and modernization of the weapon system. This dedicated team ensures the missile fleet remains ready and reliable at all times.

AFNWC experts are responsible for integrated weapons system management of the Minuteman III (LGM-30) and its components, from inception to retirement. They develop, acquire and support silo-based ICBMs, providing the single face to the warfighter, usually Air Force Global Strike Command, for acquisition, systems engineering and depot repair. This includes managing equipment spares, providing storage and transportation, and accomplishing modifications and equipment replacement to sustain silo-based ICBM systems.

Sustainment and Future Role
The Minuteman III is scheduled to be replaced by the LGM-35A Sentinel. Due to the complexity of the Sentinel program, the Minuteman III’s service life is being extended to prevent any gap in the nation’s land-based deterrent capability. It will continue to serve as the backbone of the ICBM force, operating alongside the Sentinel as the new system is gradually phased in until its eventual decommissioning.
